2016 Iran Women’s Premier Volleyball League Championship
Seven Teams Battle in 15th Iranian Women’s League
The 15th Iranian Women’s Super league will set up with seven participating teams on 24th November commemorating “Mina Martyrs”. The drawing lots has taken place at the site of Iran Volleyball Federation and the pooling of the preliminary round determined.
Seven teams of Tabriz Shahrdari, Pars, Isfahan Zob Ahan Tehran Gas, Islamic Azad University, Tehran Saipa, and Sarmayeh Bank are in preliminary rivalry. Sarmayeh Bank is a new-founded team in this season recoding the gold medal in men’s category in their first ever league appearance last year and formed their women’s team this year. Women’s league was supposed to kick off with eight teams but Shahrdari Urmia withdrew unexpectedly a week after drawing ceremony.
The home matches of preliminary round will begin on Thursday, 24th November and will terminate on Friday, 6th January for seven volleyball weeks. The preliminary round will compete in home and away matches resulting in top four teams moving up to the play-off round.
The first stage of play-off is in 3-2 wins. The top four teams face each other and those teams with two winning records (out of three) will ascend to the next round. The matches are to be held in a round robin system wherein the top will face the last and the middle two will play against each other. The winners will find their way into the final while the losers have their chance in classification round. In all stages of play-off, those teams of better records in preliminary round will host the 1st and 3rd matches.
The number of wins is preferred to the scoring points in the preliminary round in the same way as the previous edition and teams are ranked in terms of number of wins, points, set average, and point average.
The women’s last year champion was Tehran Gas while Islamic Azad University and Isfahan Zob Ahan conquered the other next ranks respectively.
Zob Ahan with five championship, four vice-championship and one bronze medal is the most honorable team of the league. From 2005 up to 2009, Zob Ahan was the absolute champion of Iran for five consecutive years.
